Hygienist

We have the services of a very experienced dental hygienist for two days a week.

Dental plaque is the thin, virtually invisible sticky food film which collects on the teeth during the course of a day. If allowed to accumulate it can very quickly start to damage the gum margins. Initially this causes occasional bleeding when the teeth are brushed. This is the first sign that something is wrong.

At this stage the problem is immediately reversible with proper cleaning techniques. These can be taught during a session with our hygienist.

Our hygienist will monitor the progress of patients needing extra care due to having a gum problem. We always like new patients to have an extended intial hygienist visit to ensure they are able to care for their teeth and gums and to establish a baseline for monitoring future progress.

Oral hygiene is an essential part of the total dental care I like to provide for my patients and this service is the most important part of it.

Sometimes I see a new patient who has quite severe gum problems which are not treatable immediately by normal measures. For these cases I always advise patients that referral to a periodontal (gum disease) specialist is necessary. After the initial specialist treatment, regular monitoring either by the specialist or by our hygienist will then be needed to make sure that gum health is maintained.
